The Jack Tales
Published in Hardcover by Callaway Editions (October, 2000)
Authors: Ray Hicks, Lynn Salsi, and Owen Smith
Average review score:

Great American Culture Book
This book is appropriate for all ages. The illustrations are outstanding, vivid, creative, and cause children to notice every little detail. The illustrations and text are brilliantly enhanced by a special C.D. by the storyteller. This text brings the boy Jack of Jack in the Beanstalk fame into American culture. He arrived in America in colonial times and those who settled in Appalachia kept his memory alive through oral tradition. This book puts Jack in the same league as "Johnny Appleseed", "Paul Bunyun", and "Pecos Bill".

Wonderfully Realized Storybook
I found this volume perfectly presented. The warmly and colorfully told tales are matched by the rich and humorous illustrations. The style of the illustrations as well as the actual production of the book remind of classic books we grew up with. The audio CD add another layer of authenticity.

Jack soars
I bought this book for my grandchildren and loved it as did my grandchildren. Hicks is a famous appalachian story teller and although the stories are somewhat familiar, Hicks gives them his own twist. The best part and what makes the book are the illustrations-somewhat in the style of Thomas Hart Benton and very well suited and expressive of what are essentially country stories. Owen Smith, the illustrator has done many New Yorker magazine covers- let's hope he illustrates many more children's books.

Johnnie Ray & Miss Kilgallen
Published in Paperback by Durban House Publishing Company, Inc. (June, 2002)
Authors: Bonnie Hill Hearn, Larry Hill, and Bonnie H. Hill
Average review score:

Gripping and Sexy
This one really surprised me. I was intrigued by the pairing of Ray and Killgallen, but didn't figure on such a well-written treatment of the unlikely duo. Tough to put aside. Very cinematic.

...

The Most Unlikely Relationship Since Wilber and Mr. Ed
If you're under sixty, you probably remember Johnnie Ray and Dorothy Kilgallen (if at all) from corney pop songs (his) and the worst game show in TV history (What's My Line.)

Pity!

Bonnie Hearn Hill and Larry Hill will introduce you to an immensely talented singer (25 top ten hits in the '50s and a passionate jazz interpreter) and the intrepid journalist who covered Lindberg and Sam Shepherd and, had she not died under surious circumstances, might have broken the story of JFK's assasination wide open. They will offer you a voyeur's tour of the unlikely affair between a bisexual vocalist and the columnist (15 years his senior) that Sinatra loved to hate. And as you cut through the alcoholic haze surrounding their extended relationship, you'll find yourself captivated by and caring about both of them. And you may come to realize that it was never, really, only about the sex.

Just don't let the characters distract you.

Bonnie Hearn Hill and Larry Hill are writers of talent and style who will captivate you and carry you along, shifting smoothly from Johnnie's hipster rap to the objective third person presentation of Dorothy's pov that, you suspect, might have been the way she looked at her life before JR.

If Johnnie Ray and Miss Kilgallen doesn't send you searching the web for his tunes and her columns, as well as anything written by the Hills, I'll be surprised.

Back to the 50s
This book transported me back to the 1950s--the Copa, seedy gin mills and tony cocktail parties in New York penthouses, as well as recording studios peopled by some of the old legends. What great portraits of Dorothy Kilgallen, the sweet innocent we all knew from What's My Line, and pop singer Johnny Ray, the "Elvis before there was an Elvis," and one of the original hipsters--and all told from the inside! As I read, it was hard to believe this was a novelization rather than a memoir from each of their points of view. We baby boomers thought we invented sex in the 60s. If so, then Dorothy and Johnny Ray were WAY ahead of their time. The entire country knew and loved the public identities of these two people--now, to get a glimpse at the real behind-the-scenes incidents, and the very human drives that led them through sex, drinking, a sampling of drugs, all the way to the doorstep of the Kennedy assassination mystery, is an exhilerating experience. I felt like I was down on the street with them, smelling the smells, hearing the music, tasting the vodka, waiting for What's My Line to come on the tube.

Keep Believing: God in the Midst of Our Deepest Struggles
Published in Paperback by Moody Publishers (January, 1997)
Authors: Ray Pritchard and Erwin W. Lutzer
Average review score:

Keep Believing
Keep Believing is a book that helps a person to keep believing even when things get rough in life. This book also explains how all things work together for good. (Romans 8:28) This book also explains how prayers that seem unanswered are really answered. I have learned to keep focusing on God because He is always there in all my troubles. I would recommend this book to all my friends and family. This book has helped me tremendously in dealing with the death of my 2 1/2 month old son.

A book everyone should read!
Ray Pritchard answers all the "why me?"questions beautifully in this book. I wish this book would have been available to me and my family 12 years ago when my sister Laura was killed in a car accident. Now I understand much more the glorious ways of our Lord. I am about to order 2 more books for friends of mine, who are now in their darkest time in life and are on the brink of losing faith. Of course I refuse to part with my copy!

I found this book very inspirational and helpful.
Ray Pritchard's new book has encouraged me during some difficult moments in my life. Keep Believing has pointed me back to God as the only solid foundation. Cheryl Lync

Knights of Madness
Published in Paperback by Ace Books (May, 1900)
Authors: Peter Haining, Ray Bradbury, and Peter S. Beagle
Average review score:

Sci-fi madness tickles the funny bone.
This is an anthology from the best in the business. Covering all topics from Medieval knights to chickens crossing the road, this book will have you in stitches. Featuring names like Ray Bradbury, Orsen Wells, Woody Allen and Peter Sellers, Knights of Madness is a read you won't want to miss.

great collection
Knights of Madness is aptly named. The twenty-four stories in this volume, from some of the maddest minds in not only literature, but entertainment, are divided into three parts, "Flights of Fantasy: stories of the absurd," "The Muddled Ages: tales of heroic times," and "Malice in Blunderland: cases of crime." However they're billed, such luminaries as Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Mark Twain, Orson Welles, A. A. Milne, Woody Allen, G. K. Chesterton, and Peter Sellers, provide phenomenally entertaining fare with such topics as how to make love to a werewolf, yet another look at why the chicken crossed the road, a medieval romance from one of the greatest minds in literature. These stories that range from the merely hilarious to the absolutely stunningly brilliant, remind us of how much fun it is to read.

Congratulations to Peter Haining and to Ace for putting together this excellent collection.

Rickey R. Mallory

what a great idea!
This is a terrific collection of 24 pieces from the leading humorists of our times. This eclectic mix will introduce you to worlds you never dreamed, insane situations and wacky perspectives which is just what we all need. I couldn't put it down and read it deep into the night.......

Living Large: How to Live Well-Even on a Little (Lifestyle Guide for Christians)
Published in Paperback by Waterbrook Press (February, 2000)
Authors: Ray Albrektson and J. Raymond Albrektson
Average review score:

Well done.
Living Large shows you how to choose your standard of living, the basics of money management, giving strategies, saving and investment planning, simple budgeting, and last but not least, how to live joyfully on the rest!

J. Raymond Albrektson shows you how to truly injoy your money with biblical common sense on how to give, spend and save. A good read for those with large or small incomes with principles directly derived from scripture.

FABULOUS AND OH SO TIMELY
As a father of three sons - no they are not heading off to college either - this is a wonderful book. As a son this is a great book for my parents to read as they approach retirement years. In a very user-friendly approachable style Ray has written a great book for all those who break out into a cold sweat when you hear the words "finance," "management" or "budget". A must read for anybody, teens on up!

An excellent, enjoyable, practical guide to personal finance
The books I've read on finance seem to fall into one of two categories: either the "how to satisfy your greed and get rich quick" or the "deny yourself and live on a strict budget" types. (Not to mention the occasional, "the world is about to end so put it all in precious metals" hyperbole.)

"Living Large" is a refreshing change from the norm. It is easy to read, filled with enjoyable personal examples, and contains practical advice for both young couples starting out and more advanced investors. I had the feeling that I was listening to the "sweet voice of reason" on every page.

And this book contains a dimension I've not seen anywhere else. Dr. Albrektson gives wise counsel on how to be genuinely contented with the income you have. Frankly, I don't know many Americans who can honestly say they are content with what they make. Perhaps with the help of "Living Large" we can start a new trend!

Last year my wife and I paid a certified financial planner $500 to do some retirement planning for us. After I read "Living Large" I was surprised how much of our planner's expert advice was exactly the same as Albrektson's in this book. If I'd bought "Living Large" a year ago, I could have saved myself $490.00!

Lost Lighthouses
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (November, 1999)
Authors: Tim Harrison and Ray Jones
Average review score:

This is a very nice and informative book.
The photos are all B&W but that's due to the old photographs. Its a shame that so many of these lights have gone. Having visited 80 lighthouses I can appreciate just how unique they are.

A fine guide to lighthouse history.
This new volume to a classic provides stories and images of almost two hundred 'lost' beacons, gathering writings from before, after and during their demise and blending research with memoirs and accounts of the lighthouses and their history. A fine guide to lighthouse history emerges.

Beautifully done!
This is an attractive, well-written and thouroughly researched book that anyone interested in lighthouse history should have in their collection. Not another coffee table book with pretty pictures from the present day, this book features lighthouses that no longer exist. Besides being engrossing reading, it amounts to a plea for readers to help save the lighthouses we still have, especially those that are endangered for one reason or another.

Man of Honor: Living the Life of Godly Character
Published in Paperback by Crossway Books (June, 1996)
Author: Ray Pritchard
Average review score:

Good for Men's Bible Study
A men's group from our church used this book as a basis for our bible study. If you know of a men's bible study looking for a good book, I would highly suggest this one.

Tough Read - But Excellent Book
This book is one of the most challenging I have read on measuring myself against the word of God. It is sometime difficult to hold a mirror up and see what you really look like and then compare that to the image God has planned for us.

But the good news is that being a Man of Honor is about who you are today and who you will be tomorrow--not who you were yesterday.

Dr. Ray Pritchard does an excellent job in this book and I highly recommend it to all men who want to be challenged beyond complacency.

An excellent study of Godly character in men
I truly enjoyed this book, and consider it a first-rate study of the qualities that embody a Godly man. The book is based on Scripture but also features modern examples of Godly men in today's world. Women will benefit from this book as well.

The Natural Step Story: Seeding a Quiet Revolution (Conscientious Commerce)
Published in Hardcover by New Society Pub (April, 2002)
Authors: Karl-Henrik Robert and Ray Anderson
Average review score:

A brilliant framework, well explained.
The founder of The Natural Step has written what is partly a history of its foundation and growth, partly an explanation of the principles by which it operates and partly a guide to the future of the move towards sustainable operation. It is also partly autobiographical and gives a fascinating insight into an extraordinary career.
Of interest to those concerned with sustainability, to systems thinkers, business strategist and to the general reader who seeks to understand the underlying principles that are elsewhere so well concealed in complexity. Robèrt's genius is in two fields: the first is in revealing the easy to understand (but less easy to apply) principles that provide a guide to moving toward sustainability, and the second is in developing and applying a form of dialogue that invites people into the creative process.
The Natural Step is an international movement which provides education and support for commercial and government organizations seeking to move to sustainability. It does this by providing a framework, a process and case and other materials for assessing sustainability and developing a strategy to move towards full sustainability while maintaining or enhancing commercial viability.
It offers a proven methodology for moving toward sustainability, which is valid at every level from the global to the personal, and is applied in a way that recognizes the requirements that the business (or whatever) remain viable at every step. This book by its founder is a valuable addition to an important literature.
While the whole book is useful, Chapter 2 (Systems Thinking and Consensus), the second half of Ch. 5 on Communication tools, Chapter 6 (The System Conditions for Sustainability), and Chapter 10 (The TNS Framework) are vital to understanding the principles and their application. The metaphor of the tree and branches in chapter 2 is absolutely fundamental to understanding the approach - get away from arguing specific detail (the 'leaves') and focus on the few driving principles ('the 'trunk and branches') that drive the complexity in the leaves.
Each case study makes a particular point. If you choose only one, Ch. 11 the McDonald's case is the one to go for, but each is carefully constructed to illustrate a specific principle.

The most satisfying book yet on The Natural Step
The recipient of the year 2000 Blue Planet Prize (aka the Ecology Nobel), Dr. Karl-Henrik Robert has offered the world a delightful peak at his decade-long adventure in making visible the possibility of a just and sustainable future for all. Beyond skillfully describing the beginnings of the idea of The Natural Step and its framework's scientific basis, he also shares some remarkable stories that express his deep social consciousness and longing for a world that works for everyone.

He lets the reader know, among other things, that
--his heroes are Greenpeace activisits
--participants at the World Economic Forum at Davos (to which he was invited) for the most part seemed unaware of the plight of the world's poor
--the apathy and helplessness that most people feel with regard to our global dilemma may be one of the most serious problems we face in resolving the dilemma
--the economic paradigm must change
--new business leaders may be key to shifting current mass media reluctance to cover issues of social and ecological sustainability
--and so much more!

The materials in the Appendixes are worth the price of the book itself. Invaluable in understanding the core values of The Natural Step, applying its framework, and learning how the agricultural sector (one of many, by the way, who have explored this approach to strategic planning) in Sweden arrived at consensus on developing a sustainable future, the back matter will fascinate as much as the growing pains and other stories in the main portion of this singular, thought-provoking publication.

Essential reading for anyone concerned about our common future.

TNS leaps forwards!
Anyone who has heard Karl-Henrik Robert speak in person will want to read this personal account of the evolution of TNS to date. He writes boldly and brightly - from his heart. I enjoyed it immensely and gained further insights into how to share The Natural Step story with others. Buy it!
